In Brief
- The Assam government will establish a new Department of Youth Welfare and Empowerment focused exclusively on the state's youth.
- It will bring currently fragmented programs—including the NSS, NCC, and Employment Exchanges—under a single umbrella.
- The decision was revealed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press conference at Lok Sewa Bhawan.
The Assam government is set to establish a dedicated Department of Youth Welfare and Empowerment to streamline and consolidate various youth-focused initiatives across the state.
Announcing the major policy decision during a press conference at Lok Sewa Bhawan on Monday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the need for a targeted approach to youth development. He noted that while several programs exist, there was previously no single administrative body solely devoted to managing youth affairs.
"There was no department in the Assam government exclusively for the welfare of youth. We have taken a decision to create a new Department of Youth Welfare and Empowerment," Chief Minister Sarma stated.
Under this new structure, the government plans to integrate a wide array of programs and services that are currently scattered across multiple departments. The proposed department will assume control over initiatives including the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), Employment Exchanges, and related welfare schemes previously run by the Education Department and other government agencies.
