Penn State researchers have created a bio-hybrid memory device combining synthetic DNA and crystalline perovskite semiconductors. By processing and storing data in the exact same location, the technology uses up to 100 times less energy than standard flash storage—a major breakthrough for power-hungry AI workloads.

  1. Massive Power Savings: Operates on less than 0.1 volts (using 10x to 100x less power than conventional memory).
  2. Insane Storage Density: Leverages DNA's incredible storage capacity, with 1 gram theoretically capable of storing up to 215 million gigabytes of data.
  3. Brain-Like Processing: Acts as a memristor, retaining a memory of electrical current even after power is turned off to enable simultaneous processing and storage like biological neurons.
  4. Tougher Than Standard Perovskite: Stays stable up to 121 degrees Celsius and retains functionality for over 6 weeks at room temperature.
  5. How It Works: Short, rigid sequences of synthetic DNA are "doped" with silver nanoparticles. The silver creates conductive channels through the DNA, which pairs with perovskite to smoothly route electron flow at ultra-low voltages.
