In Brief
- Severe erosion along Dikhhow River affects Sivasagar district villages.
- Flood-impacted areas now face renewed threats to homes and infrastructure.
- Sivasagar–Nazira road at risk from erosion.
- Locals urge urgent, permanent erosion-control measures by authorities.
Following recent severe floods in Sivasagar district, residents now confront a fresh threat from intense erosion along the Dikhhow River banks. This has particularly impacted several villages under Hahchara Mouza, where erosion has washed away homesteads and agricultural land.
The critical stretch between Hahchara Kujibali and Singhadwar Manipuri Tiniali, about one kilometre long, has seen severe damage on both river banks. In addition, the busy Sivasagar–Nazira road, also known as B.G. Road, faces increasing danger from erosion at vulnerable points.
Locals have called on the Water Resources Department to conduct immediate inspections and implement scientifically designed, permanent measures to control erosion. They warn that temporary fixes will be inadequate to address the ongoing threat.
Residents further caution that without protective steps before the next flood season, a future flood could cause significantly greater destruction in Hahchara and nearby areas. Authorities have been urged to prioritise safeguarding homes, farmland, and public infrastructure from further losses.
