The Delhi Police arrested Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka after a protest at Jantar Mantar. They were sent to judicial custody for five days by a local court. Two first information reports (FIRs) have been registered against 14 party members, alleging trespass and obstruction of police officials during the protest.
The protests were staged to assert civil rights and challenge government policies. Following the arrests, CJP founder Abhijit Dipke condemned the actions of the authorities and accused the Modi government of enforcing what he termed an “unofficial Emergency.”
Police have maintained that the protest violated existing laws, which led to the detention of the activists. The judicial custody extension signifies ongoing legal proceedings. The incident highlights tensions between civil rights groups and the government concerning public demonstrations in the capital.
