Assam and the wider Himalayan region could face a powerful earthquake of up to magnitude 8.5 in the long term due to the continued build-up of tectonic stress, according to Cotton University geology professor Dr. Abhijit Bordoloi.

The region lies in a highly active seismic zone where the Indian tectonic plate continues to push against the Eurasian plate, causing stress to accumulate along faults. Assam has also experienced major earthquakes in the past, highlighting its vulnerability to strong seismic activity.

However, experts clarify that the possibility of a large earthquake should be understood as a long-term seismic hazard assessment and not a prediction of an imminent earthquake. Current scientific methods cannot accurately determine the exact time, location or magnitude of a future earthquake.
