UAE Recognizes Extraordinary Heroism
President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan formally honored Captain Smit Machchhar and the flight crew of flydubai Flight FZ1073 during a special ceremony on Tuesday, October 28, 2026.
The high-level recognition followed an incident on September 30, 2026, when the co-pilot launched an unprovoked attack inside the cockpit mid-flight. Gravely injured, Captain Machchhar managed to unlatch the cockpit door just before losing consciousness, enabling passengers and deadheading pilots to rush in, restrain the co-pilot, and safely divert the aircraft to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, saving all 180 occupants on board.
Global Commendation and Recovery
Photographs from the ceremony showed Captain Machchhar recovering in a sling and receiving warm appreciation from the UAE leadership, including Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The incident drew widespread international praise for averting a major aviation disaster, with leaders across India, the UAE, and Israel commending the captain's resilience, composure, and dedication to passenger safety under extreme duress.
