India now imports 67% of its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri announced. This marks a significant shift amid geopolitical challenges in West Asia. Previously, India sourced about 60% of its LPG imports, with approximately 90% of those supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint vulnerable to disruptions.
The minister highlighted that this change reflects India's efforts to diversify and secure its energy supply routes, reducing reliance on unstable regions. This adjustment is part of a broader strategy responding to regional tensions that threaten consistent fuel supplies vital to India’s economy.
At the CII International Energy Conference, Puri noted that the increased share of U.S. LPG imports follows earlier diversification moves and reinforces stronger India-U.S. energy ties. Over the past decade, India has expanded energy partnerships to ensure reliable supplies and meet rising demand for clean cooking fuel and industrial use.
