Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, announced several key measures to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve medical access across the state.
A major update is the increase in coverage under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh, offering significantly greater financial protection for those facing high medical costs. The government also plans to build a 400-bed multi-super-speciality hospital in Perambur, the Chief Minister's constituency, at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore. This facility aims to enhance access to advanced and specialised medical services in the region.
Additionally, ₹673.44 crore has been allocated for the State’s Cancer Mission. This investment seeks to bolster cancer-related healthcare and improve treatment facilities as part of the government’s wider health initiatives. Highlighting equal healthcare access, the CM stated that "the value of a person’s life should not be determined by their income." He emphasized the government's commitment to non-discriminatory treatment regardless of economic status, asserting that "medical care is a basic right of every human being, not a concession."
