In Brief
- The spacecraft achieved a final geosynchronous orbit of 35,765 km × 36,196 km inclined at 29.980 degrees.
- Four planned orbital manoeuvres required a combined Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) burn totaling 6,164 seconds.
- ISRO reported the satellite is in normal health and fully operational for upcoming in-orbit commissioning.
- NVS-03 is designed to strengthen India’s regional navigation system (NavIC) by operating across L1, L5, and S-bands with an indigenous atomic clock.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reached a vital milestone in its satellite-based navigation program after successfully guiding the NVS-03 spacecraft into its designated geosynchronous orbit. The positioning marks the completion of critical orbit-raising operations following the satellite's initial launch aboard the GSLV-F18 mission on October 30, 2026.
Execution of Orbit-Raising Operations
Initially injected into a 170.3 km × 38,080 km Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO), the 2,250 kg spacecraft underwent four precise, step-by-step orbital corrections supervised by ISRO engineers. These maneuvers relied on the satellite's onboard propulsion unit, registering a cumulative Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) engine burn duration of 6,164 seconds to raise both perigee and apogee.
The operations effectively placed NVS-03 into its targeted geosynchronous profile measuring 35,765 km by 36,196 km at an inclination of 29.980 degrees, heading toward its designated orbital slot at 111.75° East. Space agency telemetry confirmed that all sub-systems are performing normally.
Enhancing India's Regional Navigation Capabilities
NVS-03 represents the third satellite in ISRO's second-generation navigation series aimed at augmenting the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) framework. Equipped with an Indian-developed rubidium atomic clock and multi-band transmitters (L1, L5, and S-band), the satellite will expand position accuracy and signal availability across the Indian mainland and surrounding areas extending 1,500 km beyond national borders.
With the successful orbit placement complete, ISRO teams will now proceed with payload deployment and extensive in-orbit testing prior to integrating NVS-03 into the active NavIC constellation.
