The Indian government has approved the Reserve Bank of India's proposal to conduct field trials for ₹10 and ₹20 polymer banknotes.
The trial will involve printing and testing 100 crore pieces of each denomination, totaling ₹3,000 crore in face value, in everyday circulation.
Existing paper currency will not be replaced and remains fully legal tender alongside the new polymer notes.
Polymer notes are designed to last 2.5 to 4 times longer than paper notes. They are more resistant to dirt, moisture, and wear, and offer enhanced anti-counterfeiting security.
A nationwide rollout of polymer banknotes will be considered only after evaluating their performance in real-world conditions.
