The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced disciplinary action against West Indies cricketers Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford on Monday, penalizing both players for separate Level 1 breaches committed during the second T20 International match against India in Ranchi.
Powell ran afoul of regulations during the sixth over of the West Indies innings. Following his dismissal by Indian pacer Mayank Yadav, Powell struck the ball away with his bat, an action constituting a breach of Article 2.2 concerning the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing.
Shortly after, teammate Sherfane Rutherford breached Article 2.8, which regulates showing dissent toward an umpire's decision. During the 13th over, Rutherford reacted aggressively and yelled at the on-field umpire after a delivery he contested was not ruled a wide.
Match officials, including on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Rohan Pandit, third umpire Nitin Menon, and fourth umpire Virender Sharma, formally leveled the charges. Because both players admitted to the infractions and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Prakash Bhatt, formal hearings were deemed unnecessary. Each player received an official reprimand alongside a single demerit point added to their disciplinary records, marking their first offenses within a 24-month period.
