The Assam Forest Department has launched the ‘Nameri Wild Classroom’ initiative to help students explore wildlife, biodiversity and forest ecosystems through practical learning. Announced by Forest Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah on October 10, 2026, the programme takes education beyond traditional classrooms and into the wilderness of Nameri Tiger Reserve.
The initiative is open to students of Class VIII and above, including college students, and offers two- to three-day residential educational programmes. Activities include birdwatching, guided forest walks, wildlife tracking, river ecology lessons and rafting on the Jia-Bharali River, giving participants an opportunity to experience nature firsthand.
Naturalists and forest personnel will guide students throughout the programme, while participants will maintain field journals to record their observations and receive certificates upon completion. The initiative aims to strengthen environmental awareness, encourage scientific curiosity and inspire young people to explore careers in wildlife research, ecology and conservation.
