On October 10, 2026, Mumbai witnessed a major protest at August Kranti Maidan, where actor Imran Khan joined demonstrators supporting the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) protest in New Delhi. The demonstration demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Police detained more than 400 people across Mumbai as authorities moved to prevent unauthorised gatherings.

On October 10–11, 2026, Mumbai Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Gamdevi Police Station against Imran Khan and other protesters. The case invoked several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 223, 126(2) and 189, relating to disobedience of a public servant’s order, wrongful restraint and unlawful assembly.

During the incident, Imran Khan reportedly questioned the reason for his detention and later shared updates from inside a police van on social media. Police action followed concerns over gatherings at August Kranti Maidan, which was not a designated protest site under a Bombay High Court order. The incident has drawn attention to the protest, the demand for electoral transparency and the authorities’ handling of public demonstrations.
