Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc became the leading left-arm wicket-taker in Test cricket by surpassing Sri Lankan bowler Rangana Herath.

Starc claimed his 434th wicket by dismissing Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam during the first Test at Marrara Cricket Ground, moving one ahead of Herath's 433 wickets and matching former India captain Kapil Dev's overall total.

He is now six wickets short of South African pace legend Dale Steyn's 439 wickets, aiming to enter the top 10 all-time Test wicket-takers.

Among left-arm bowlers, Pakistan's Wasim Akram follows Herath with 414 wickets, while New Zealand's Daniel Vettori has 362 and India's Ravindra Jadeja 348 wickets.

The milestone occurred on a challenging day for Australia, who were bowled out for 198 after electing to bat first. Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud took a career-best 6/55, and Steve Smith top-scored with 71.
