Northern Bullet Train Corridor Officially Extended to Guwahati

Assam is set to become an integral part of India’s high-speed rail map. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on October 31, 2026, that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the extension of the Northern bullet train corridor all the way to Guwahati.

Originally mapped out to connect major northern and eastern centers up to Siliguri in West Bengal, the project blueprint was expanded following strategic representations from the Assam government.

Connecting the Capital to the Northeast

The approved high-speed network will serve as a massive trans-regional artery, linking Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna, and Siliguri before crossing into Assam as its final northeastern terminus.

While traditional train journeys between Guwahati and New Delhi take considerable time, the ultra-fast rail link is projected to cut travel duration down to approximately eight hours. State officials noted that this unprecedented connectivity will offer a fast, reliable alternative to commercial aviation, seamlessly integrating the region with major economic, educational, and political hubs across the country.
