On August 15, 2026, a total of 1,057 personnel were conferred gallantry and service medals to mark India's Independence Day, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced on August 14. These awards recognise acts of bravery, distinguished service, and dedication across various regions and departments.
Of the gallantry awardees, 197 were from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, reflecting ongoing efforts in combating insurgency. Furthermore, 51 recipients hailed from Jammu & Kashmir, highlighting acts of valour and exemplary service in the security-sensitive region.
The North-Eastern states contributed 12 awardees, underlining the commitment of personnel operating in difficult terrain and challenging conditions. These honours encompass various categories of medals that acknowledge courage, sacrifice, and meritorious service to the nation.
The awards contribute to honouring personnel who safeguard the country's integrity, peace, and security amid multiple internal and external challenges. The government continues its tradition of publicly recognising such contributions each year on Independence Day.
