In Brief

  1. Manipur reopens National Highways blocked since May 2023 ethnic conflict.
  2. Blockades had disrupted movement between Imphal and other parts of India.
  3. Imphal–Guwahati Bus Service will resume shortly
  4. Government action aims to restore normalcy and economic activity in the region.

The Manipur government announced the reopening of National Highways that had been blocked since ethnic clashes erupted in May 2023. In a major move towards restoring normalcy and rebuilding trust among communities, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen on Saturday jointly announced the immediate reopening of the National Highways in Manipur for free movement of people from all communities. The blockades affected key arterial routes connecting Imphal with the rest of the country, hindering movement of people and goods.

Authorities lifted the restrictions to facilitate smooth transit and restore vital communication links across the state. The highways play a crucial role in trade, transportation, and access to essential services for residents.

The government’s decision comes amid efforts to stabilise the region and resume normal functioning after months of disruption caused by the ethnic conflict. Local administration and law enforcement officials coordinated to ensure safe passage along these routes.

Restoring these highways is expected to aid economic recovery and improve daily life for communities affected by the prolonged blockade. The move has been welcomed as a positive step towards peace and development in Manipur.
